About Us
Jim Matteucci, Pedorthist
I am a local boy. Born and raised. My Family has been in the shoe business in Albuquerque since 1904. My Great Grandfather, Pompilio, was called upon by his uncle to come to the US and help run his grocer/saloon. Pompilio quickly realized the grocer/saloon business was not for him. Being a saddle & boot specialist while serving in the Italian Army out of Lucca Italy, he decided to open his own repair shop. Paris Boot & Saddle Repair was born in 1904 at 1st & Central in downtown Albuquerque.
Paris Shoes became one of the largest independently owned shoe stores in the USA for many decades. At one time Paris was Rivaled only by Nordstrom on the West Coast. Unfortunately, retail changed and evolved after 90 years, and my Dad closed Paris in 1994. My brother did open another store locally, Shoes on a Shoestring. He later decided to leave the industry in 2004 to seek other opportunities. For the first time in 100 years the Matteucci’s were out of the shoe business.
I myself did not want to have anything to do with the shoe business I grew up in. I wanted something different, something fast and exciting. Being an accident prone child I wanted to become an EMT. I was able to serve my community with both local and rural EMS until 2013 when my growing family required more attention and decided to leave the EMS community.
I have always wanted to run for office. I figured the fasted way was to become an attorney. I needed a job that would allow me to study and while not busy. I knew shoes, I’d always known shoes. So that’s what I did. I sold shoes. But I was finding many of my customers were having issues related to their shoes but even more so to their posture, and every step they took. I started tinkering. A passion began to grow. The roots of my family, my great grandfather, I found my calling. It became simple. I was chosen for this.
In 2017 I had the opportunity to meet and work with Peg Swisher. She is truly one of the most knowledgeable individuals I’ve ever met when it comes to the profession of Pedorthics and footwear. My acquired knowledge base from her along with my medical background has helped built a foundation to bring Pedorthics into many future generations.
Today, I venture into the unknown using all the skills I’ve gathered throughout my life to make Matteucci Orthotics & Pedorthics of NM a reality. I cannot do this without so much incredible support from Family James, Ashton, Chris & Sarah, and Jim & Liz. But, even more so, my clients. Because of my clients I have chosen to do this. You, my dysfunctional foot family, have given me the courage to do this. I am grateful.
